TONY ORTEGA

Anthony Ortega is a Denver-based Chicano artist, printmaker, painter, and educator whose career spans more than four decades. His work explores Chicano identity, cultural memory, spirituality, and the concept of Nepantla—the in-between space where cultures, histories, and identities intersect. Drawing from the traditions of northern New Mexico, Indigenous iconography, and contemporary life, Ortega creates paintings, prints, installations, and illustrated books that reflect the richness and complexity of the Mexican American experience.

Ortega has presented over 30 solo exhibitions and exhibited widely throughout the United States, Latin America, and internationally. His work has been shown at major institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, the Harwood Museum of Art (Taos, NM), RedLine Contemporary Art Center (Denver), and the National Hispanic Cultural Center (Albuquerque, NM). His work is included in prominent public and private collections such as the Denver Art Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and the Museo Estudio Diego Rivera in Mexico City.

He holds an MFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of Colorado Boulder and has taught at Regis University since 2003, where he continues to mentor emerging artists while maintaining an active studio practice. In 2018, he was named Regis College Faculty Lecturer of the Year.

Among his honors are the Colorado Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts (1999) and the Denver Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts (1998). Through both his teaching and his artistic practice, Ortega continues to contribute to contemporary Chicano art discourse while expanding the visual language of Nepantla.
